Here are two Pets that you might think are similar but in fact have different lifestyles as well as different physical traits. A hamster looks like a furry mouse (with no tail) and a guinea pig is bigger; with a huge round nose and its legs are hidden underneath it. Hamsters are active during the night and like solitude; when in a bad mood, WATCH OUT they could hurt you. Guinea pigs, on the contrary, are active during the day and like to move about with their own kind. They tend to be calm and docile pets.

Because of their friendly nature, easy adaptability, cleanliness and their overall personality, guinea pigs make good pets; but they do not have a good life span (maximum 5 - 7 years). They are sociable and it is best to keep more than just one guinea pig in your cage. But make sure that the second guinea pig is of the same sex as the first; or else you’ll end up having more guinea pigs than you can handle.

Usually, 2 females are put together. Keeping males together might not be a wise idea as they might fight. Hamsters are active during the evening and are quite playful (Hamsters are good for people who return home after work or school). It’s not necessary to have a second hamster. They don’t mind being alone in a cage.

Guinea pigs and hamsters have to be housed in the proper way. A good cage should be provided and the cage should be cleaned and disinfected once every week. The food requirements of a guinea pig can be easily met as they are plant-eating animals; and thus like grass, roots, fruits and seeds. Hamsters like seeds and may be given a worm too.

There are many breeds of guinea pigs and the hair length usually depends on the type of breed. A popular short-haired guinea pig breed is the American. A long-haired guinea pig breed is the Peruvian. As for Hamsters, there are two main breeds: the Syrian hamster and the Dwarf hamster. As the name suggests, the Dwarf hamster is much smaller than the Syrian hamster.
